This was interesting and mostly an enjoyable read, though I admit I was skimming pretty heavily towards the end. Its a collection of anecdotes, myths, folktales, and semi-reliable histories gathered and retold by English Professor and amateur historian Elizabeth Reynard, drawing on a range of printed sources and oral histories.

It begins with the persistent speculations (still unconfirmed, still impossible to disprove) about Viking explorations of Cape Cod, continues with several Wampanoag legends and traditions, and takes us from the early seventeenth through late nineteenth century stories of witches…goodwives…pirates…and ghosts. Reynards love for this place and fascination with her many subjects is clear, though I found parts of it rather disjointed, as she often tried to include different variants of a given tale in one telling, leading to some internal contradictions and muddled timelines.

The prose style is antique, even for the 1930s when it was written, and it is a little draggy at times, but at other times it added to the pleasure of the reading by making me feel like I was digging through old source documents or hearing the old timers tell their stories. Glad I read it, but probably won’t look at it again unless Im looking for a historical source.
